Simple Ways to Stop Cockroaches From Entering Through Your Shower Drain

Keeping cockroaches out of the bathroom can feel like an ongoing battle, especially when they sneak in through the shower drain. Warm, humid spaces are ideal for these pests, which makes bathroom plumbing a common entry point. Even with regular cleaning, you may still find unwanted visitors. One surprisingly effective solution uses an everyday item you probably already have at home — a simple party balloon.

To understand why this trick works, it helps to know how cockroaches travel. They often move through pipes and tiny openings, taking advantage of damp areas where they can hide easily. The balloon method helps narrow the drain’s entrance, making it harder for roaches to crawl through. To try it, remove the drain cover and cut both ends off a standard balloon to create a stretchy ring. Slide this ring around the edge of the drain cover so it forms a tight seal when placed back in position.

Once secured, the balloon creates a smaller opening that still allows water to pass through while blocking most pests. However, this step is most effective when paired with general moisture control. Keeping the bathroom as dry as possible—wiping surfaces, running ventilation fans, and cleaning around drains—reduces the conditions cockroaches look for. A dry environment makes your bathroom far less inviting to them.

Finally, check for cracks, gaps, or loose areas around pipes, and seal them promptly to prevent roaches from entering through hidden spaces. Together, these simple practices create a stronger barrier against pests and help maintain a cleaner, more comfortable bathroom. With routine upkeep and the balloon method in place, you can significantly reduce the chance of roaches creeping into your shower and enjoy a fresher, more protected space.
