Man Offers Panhandler Honest Work But Gets Turned Down, So He Makes A Sign Of His Own

Ryan Bray is always trying to be kind, especially to those in need. On his way home from work one Sunday, he ran into a panhandler begging for change on the street. He sees these beggars all the time because they’re so common where he lives.

Bray felt moved by the man’s story and decided to help him in a more substantial way than simply giving him some spare change. He offered the beggar $15/hour to come work for his family business so that he could get off the streets permanently.

The guy mocked Bray’s proposal. “Absolutely not!” the beggar cried. He couldn’t see why he would work for money when people were throwing loose change at him. Besides, the bum earned a lot more cash per hour than Bray was offering him.

Bray contemplated raising his cash bid, but then the man became menacing. It appeared as if Bray’s job proposition ignited fury in the beggar, feeding the flames of his idleness and endangering his perception of a “good life” where he is given money without having to work for it. Bray, who stayed out of other people’s business normally, was offended by this outburst. He went home immediately to write up his own sign before heading back to the same street corner. There, he shamed the panhandler for being lazy and inactive. Bray, who is generally kind-hearted, felt the urge to make this beggar suffer. That’s why he stood on the street with his sign that urged motorists NOT to give money to beggars.

I HADN’T SPOKEN TO MY DAD IN 6 YEARS—NOW I CAN ONLY SEE HIM THROUGH GLASS He used to call me his little girl, even when I was pushing thirty and had my own apartment across town. We were close—really close—until we weren’t. Six years ago, we had a fight. A stupid one, if I’m being honest. It started over politics, but underneath that was grief, control, and two people who didn’t know how to speak the same language anymore. I slammed the door on him that day. Neither of us reached out after. And then came the call. A woman from the facility told me he’d been admitted a month ago. Early signs of dementia, and then pneumonia hit. They were short-staffed. No visitors allowed inside. I didn’t even know he’d left his house. I drove there the next morning, heart racing like I was pulling up to some courtroom instead of a nursing home. When he saw me outside his window, he just stared. I waved. He blinked. And then, slowly, he sat up. That second picture? That’s the first time we’d touched in over half a decade. Glass or not, it broke me. He didn’t say much—couldn’t really—but he lifted his hand, and I matched it with mine. I told him I was sorry. I don’t even know if he heard me, or understood what I meant. But he closed his eyes, just for a moment, like he was holding something sacred. I didn’t tell anyone I went. Not my brother, not even my partner. And now I’ve got a voicemail from the nurse that I still haven’t listened to. I don’t know if I’m ready to hear what it says. (continue reading in the first cᴑmment

IT TOOK ME 2 YEARS TO FIND THE HOUSE FROM AN OLD PHOTO I GOT ANONYMOUSLY – I STEPPED INSIDE AND MY EYES WELLED UP I grew up without a family. My earliest memories are of living in a foster home. The closest thing I had to family were the teachers and the other kids I grew up with there. They shaped who I am today and led me to where I am now—34 years old and running my own small logistics company. But two years ago, something completely unexpected happened. I found a worn-out package sitting in my yard. Inside were old, battered toys and a few faded photos. One picture showed a baby with a birthmark on its arm—the same birthmark I have. Another was of a house with a nearly illegible caption, almost like an address, but it was too faint to read. Along with the photos was a letter. It said that I’d been left on the foster home’s doorstep as a baby with this very box. Somehow, the staff lost it, and I never got it back—until now. For two years, I tried to figure out where that house in the photo was. I sent the picture to experts, hired private investigators, and did everything I could. Just recently, one of the detectives gave me an address. The house was 130 miles away, out in the countryside. That weekend, I drove out there. What I found was an old, abandoned house at the edge of a forest, standing all alone. The windows and doors were boarded up, but I managed to find a way inside. The moment I stepped in and looked around, tears filled my eyes. ⬇️

When people ask where I’m from, I give a vague smile and say, “Here and there.” It’s easier than explaining the truth: foster homes, nights spent staring…
