It is said to claim the lives of 20,000 Thai people each year..šŸ„ŗšŸ„ŗ

The food we consume plays a significant, if nor crucial, role in maintaining good health. Having said that, moderation is the key. Consuming too much of certain food can affect our overall well-being.

We should all strive for a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains if we want to maintain good physical and mental health.

Speaking of foods that can have a negative impact on our body, there is a certain Thai dish that is so dangerous to consume it is believed to take the lives of 20,000 peopleĀ each year.

The ingredients themselves donā€™t impose any danger, except for one key component.

This dish, known as Koi Pla, is made of raw fish, lemon juice, herbs, and spices, but it is considered a salad by the people living in modern-day Laos and Isan. Sometimes, galangal, shallots, and mint are used for added flavor.

The fish used to prepare this dish is caught from a body of water in the Mekong region which contains parasitic flatworms.

Sadly, people consume this dish, they are likely to end up with the parasites in their body. These parasites attack the liver and cause liver cancer.

This type of cancer is mostly present in people of East Asia.

Doctor Narong Khuntikeo is trying to raiseĀ awarenessĀ of the dangers of Koi Pla. His own parents died of liver cancer after consuming this dish.

Unfortunately, the Lao people wonā€™t listen. They simply wonā€™t give up their tradition of preparing and consuming this dish that can lead them to death.

ā€œItā€™s a very big health burden around here,ā€ Dr. Khuntikeo told AgenceĀ France-Presse.Ā ā€œBut nobody knows about this because they die quietly, like leaves falling from a tree.ā€

In 2017, the doctor, along with a group of scientists, performed ultrasound scans and urine tests at the people of the region where the dish is consumed on a daily basis.

The results showed that around 80 percent of the people from different communities have had the parasite.

When sharing the findings with the residents, most of them wonā€™t care.

ā€œOh well, there are many ways to die,ā€ one of them said. ā€œIā€™ve never been checked before, so I think I will probably have it because Iā€™ve been eating (koi pla) since I was little,ā€ another added.

I ASKED MY NEIGHBOR TO CLEAN UP AFTER USING MY BBQ ā€” THE NEXT DAY, SHE LEFT HER OWN “RULES” ON MY DOOR, BUT I SHUT THAT DOWN. So, about six months ago, a new neighbor moved in ā€” a woman (40) with her son (16). At first, she seemed chill. I even lent her some household stuff and let her use my outdoor grill station when we weren’t home. No big deal, right? Wrong. One weekend, me, my husband and our kids went to visit my parents. We came back, and boom ā€” MY BACKYARD LOOKED LIKE A FRAT HOUSE HAD JUST HOSTED A BBQ APOCALYPSE. Empty bottles, food scraps, grill left dirty like it had survived a grease explosion. I ask her about it, and she just shrugs, saying it was her son’s birthday, so you know, it’s just kids, it’s what kids do. Apparently, I shouldn’t make a fuss over something so minor. Lady, it’s my backyard, not a public park! So, I do the reasonable thing. I draft up three simple rules: 1. If you use something, clean it and put it back. 2. Please, clean up after your child. 3. That’s it. Just be respectful. I hand it to her, thinking we’re all good. THE NEXT DAY, I WAKE UP TO A LIST OF HER RULES TAPED TO MY DOOR. HER rules. For MY property. Spoiler: I didnā€™t follow her rules. In two weeks, her son knocked on my door and pleaded, “Ma’am, please, stop!” šŸ‘‡šŸ¼ Full story in the first comment šŸ‘‡

MY SISTER TOOK BACK THE CAR SHE GIFTED ME AFTER I UPGRADED IT, SO I TAUGHT HER A LESSON. My older sister sold me her old car for a symbolic amount. It hadnā€™t run in ages, with flat tires and rust under the hood. But she made a big deal out of gifting it to me. Knowing my way around cars, I invested $5,000 to upgrade everythingā€”new interior, fresh paint, new tires, and wheels. I was thrilled with the result. One morning, as I was about to leave for university, my sister stormed in, DEMANDING THE CAR BACK. I was sh0cked. She claimed her husband’s car had broken down, and since she hadnā€™t sent the sale documents, the car was still legally hers. She said she had changed her mind. My parents sided with her, arguing that she needed the car for her kids. My first thought was to call the police, but then I had a better idea. I decided to teach her a lesson she wouldnā€™t forget. A POOR BOY’S LIFE CHANGES AFTER HE PULLS AN OLD, RUSTY CHAIN STICKING OUT OF THE SAND ON A REMOTE BEACH Adam is 13 years old and lives with his grandfather in an old trailer near the ocean. His parents passed away when he was just 3, and since then, his grandpa has been his only family. They don’t have much, but his grandpa has raised him wellā€”Adam is strong, smart, and way more mature than most kids his age. One afternoon, he rode his bike down to the beach, just like any other day. He wandered along the shore, letting the waves tickle his feetā€”until something caught his eye. A thick, rusted chain lay partially buried in the sand. Curious, Adam grabbed it and pulledā€”but it barely budged. Whatever it was connected to was massive. From that moment on, Adam became obsessed with digging. He had no idea what he was about to uncoverā€”or how it was about to change his life forever ā¬‡ļø

The rusted chain jutting from the sand seemed worthless to everyone else, but to 13-year-old Adam, it promised an escape from poverty. He couldnā€™t have known that…

THEY WERE PRAYING IN A CIRCLEā€”BUT NO ONE TAUGHT THEM HOW It was just after snack time, and I was washing out some paint cups when I noticed the room had gone oddly quiet. Too quiet for a group of 4- and 5-year-olds who usually treated volume like a sport. I turned the corner into the play area and stopped in my tracks. Four of themā€”Niko, Janelle, Izzy, and Samirā€”were sitting cross-legged in a perfect little circle. Hands held. Eyes shut. Heads bowed. They were whispering something I couldnā€™t quite catch at first. I thought maybe it was a song or one of those rhyming games they loved. But when I leaned in, I realized they wereā€¦ praying. Like, really praying. Asking for things. Saying ā€œAmen.ā€ Janelle even crossed herself at the end like she’d seen in church. Thing is, we donā€™t do any kind of religious activity in our classroom. Itā€™s a public kindergarten. No nativity plays, no Bible stories, nothing. And Iā€™d never seen any of these four talk about faith or even mimic that kind of behavior before. I crouched down and gently asked, ā€œHey, what are you guys doing?ā€ Izzy opened one eye and whispered, ā€œWeā€™re asking the sky to help us.ā€ ā€œHelp you with what?ā€ I asked. Niko just said, ā¬‡ļø
