Former First Lady responds to Donald Trump tearing down the East Wing façade of the White House

Clinton Criticizes Trump’s Ballroom Project

Construction crews have begun demolishing part of the White House’s East Wing to make way for a new $250 million ballroom commissioned by President Donald Trump. The move immediately sparked controversy in Washington.

Former First Lady Hillary Clinton reacted sharply on X, reminding Americans that the White House belongs to the public. She criticized Trump’s decision as a disregard for the building’s historic importance.

Demolition Sparks Outrage

Despite earlier assurances that the historic structure would remain intact, photos show heavy machinery tearing through the East Wing. The Washington Post reported that the sound of demolition carried across the White House campus, even as security fencing blocked much of the view. Onlookers, including Secret Service agents, gathered near the Treasury Department steps as work began.

Trump Promotes His Vision

Trump celebrated the milestone on Truth Social on October 20, 2025. He wrote, “I am pleased to announce that ground has been broken on the White House grounds to build the new, big, beautiful White House Ballroom.”

He described the project as a modernization of the historic estate and claimed it would enhance the building’s appearance. According to Trump, previous presidents had dreamed of such a structure, but he alone had the vision and determination to bring it to life.

He emphasized that the ballroom is privately funded. “The White House Ballroom is being privately funded by many generous Patriots, Great American Companies, and, yours truly. This Ballroom will be happily used for Generations to come! President DJT.”

Trump’s Additional Headlines

The ballroom controversy is not Trump’s only recent headline. On October 13, Time Magazine praised him for helping broker a ceasefire in Gaza. Yet Trump criticized the cover photo, posting on social media that it was the “Worst of All Time”. He claimed the angle and lighting distorted his appearance, making him look unnatural.

Tradition vs. Modernization

As demolition continues, debates intensify over balancing modernization with preservation. Critics like Clinton argue the issue goes beyond style. They stress the importance of respecting a historic building that has symbolized the American people for over 200 years.

Supporters of the project highlight private funding and the potential to create a lasting space for future generations. Meanwhile, Washington watches closely as the East Wing undergoes a transformation unlike any in recent presidential history.
