Couple celebrates 80th anniversary and shares the secret behind their long-lasting union

Elton and Betty Denner’s love story is the stuff of fairy tales.
These California natives first crossed paths in high school in 1939.

Their connection was undeniable, and it quickly became clear that being just friends wouldn’t suffice.
As Elton embarked on his college journey at Santa Ana College to study engineering, the world was plunged into the chaos of World War II.

This uncertainty prompted the young lovebirds to solidify their bond, leading them to tie the knot in October 1942.

But their challenges were far from over.
Elton soon enlisted in the Army Air Corps pilot training program, where he honed his skills on single-engine planes and later, the B-29 bombers.

He was stationed on the Pacific island of Tinian, holding the rank of a second lieutenant.

Reflecting on those times, Elton remarked in an interview with KGW News, “It would have been terrible to be in the Army and moving around, and not have her with me.”

Betty echoed his sentiments, adding that the war set the trajectory of their life together.

Through thick and thin, Betty remained steadfastly by Elton’s side, whether during training or active duty.
Their bond was evident to all who knew them.

They were inseparable, and many considered their meeting a divine blessing.
After the war’s tumultuous events, the couple settled back in California.

Here, they nurtured their growing family, which included two daughters and a son.

Elton channeled his skills into becoming an architectural draftsman and eventually launched his own general contracting business.

Betty, the heart of their home, primarily took on the role of a homemaker.

However, she also ventured into the workforce, serving in medical offices and even a junior high school cafeteria.

The Denners’ journey took another turn in 1980 when they decided to retire.
They initially moved to Vida, near Eugene, but the pull of family saw them return to California.

In recent years, they’ve made Oregon their home, specifically at the Brookdale Senior Community in Newberg.

It was here that they marked a significant milestone – their 80th wedding anniversary.

This grand celebration, held on October 15th, was a joyous affair.
Their three children, nine grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren joined in the festivities at the Senior Community.

The atmosphere was electric with love and admiration.

The couple took this opportunity to reflect on their journey together, sharing pearls of wisdom on sustaining a long and fulfilling marriage.
Betty’s advice was simple yet profound, “Have a good foundation, keep your feet on the ground.”
