US singer and One Direction support act, 26, dies after scooter accident

Camryn Magness, a singer-songwriter who performed with One Direction, Cody Simpson, Greyson Chance, and Fifth Harmony, has died at age 26.

Magness passed away on December 5 after she was fatally struck while riding an electric scooter, according to People and confirmed by TMZ.

Collision with a pedestrian

Camryn’s death was shared on her official Facebook page on December 9, alongside a video of her scuba diving.

Her family’s announcement read:

”Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of our beloved Camryn, a radiant force whose voice, coy, and bright spirit touched so many. Whether beneath the waves or on stage, she met life with fearless energy and boundless kindness. In the quiet between waves, her memory will surface—bright, bold, unforgotten. Rest in endless blue, our sweet girl. You are deeply loved and forever cherished.”

According to TMZ, Miami Beach Police responded to a collision involving an electric mobility scooter and a pedestrian around 7:52 PM last Friday.

Magness was riding as a passenger when the crash occurred. All involved suffered serious injuries and were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where Camryn later died. Her mother, Sarah, confirmed she will not have a public memorial.

Joining One Direction

Magness’ career began early. At 8 years old, she sent a demo to future manager Jeff Pringle. Collaborating with Blessed by a Broken Heart, she recorded “Wait and See,” later featured in Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer. Her YouTube covers brought attention from Greyson Chance and Cody Simpson, leading her to open their Waiting 4U Tour in 2010 and perform again with Chance in 2012.

That same year, she joined One Direction for seven shows on their Up All Night Tour, later rejoining them for the Take Me Home Tour in 2013. Speaking to Teen Vogue, she said:

”Going into the tour, I was an unknown artist. It’s a great feeling to be walking around and someone coming up to me and saying, ‘Hey, you did so well!’ It was really exciting for me when that happened for the first time.”

In another 2012 interview with CBS News, she described the experience as ”amazing.”

”At the end of it all, it went amazing and I made a lot of new fans and friends.”

A gifted performer

Over the years, Camryn released singles including “Now or Never,” “Lovesick,” and “Machines,” and in 2016 she opened for Fifth Harmony on their 7/27 Tour. She released her most recent project, the Love Maps EP, in 2021.

Her obituary reads:

”A gifted performer, Camryn’s voice and music were extensions of her soul. Whether she was on a stage, at a family gathering, or sharing a song with someone who needed it, Camryn’s music was a reflection of her heart, her courage, and her endless creativity.”

Magness was engaged to her fiancé Christian, “the love of her life,” and together they were planning a future centered around their two beloved dogs, Brooklyn and Zeppelin. She is survived by her parents, Sarah and Gary, and her siblings, Chelsea and Cable.

She was 26.

RIP, Camryn.
