Is Bathroom Tap Water Actually Safe to Drink?

You’ve probably wondered mid-toothbrush: Is bathroom tap water safe to drink? The short answer — usually yes, but it depends on your plumbing.

Most bathrooms and kitchens share the same city-filtered water supply, meaning the water itself is clean.

The concern lies in the pipes. Homes built before 1986 may still have lead or copper plumbing,

which can leach into standing water. Testing your tap with a simple home kit is the safest way to know.

Because bathroom sinks are used less often, the water can taste stale or metallic. Just let it run for a few seconds

before drinking. Also note that some filtration systems only serve the kitchen, leaving bathroom taps unfiltered.

And no — it’s not toilet water. Bathroom faucets and toilets share the same clean source; you’re not sipping from the bowl unless your plumber went rogue.

Bottom line: In modern homes with updated plumbing and a clean sink, an occasional drink from the bathroom tap is fine.

But if your house is older or you’re unsure about the pipes, it’s better to stick with kitchen water or keep a refillable bottle nearby.
