‘Star Trek’ Star William Shatner Hospitalized After Medical Emergency

Beloved Hollywood star William Shatner, 94, was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday after suffering a medical emergency at his Los Angeles home.

According to TMZ, Shatner experienced a blood sugar issue and quickly called emergency services himself when he realized something was wrong. Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived and took him to a nearby hospital as a precaution. He is now said to be “doing good” and “resting comfortably.”

The legendary actor, best known for playing Captain James T. Kirk on Star Trek, has faced health challenges in recent years. In March 2024, he revealed he had been treated for stage 4 melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer that can spread throughout the body.

Shatner first noticed a small lump under his right ear. His family doctor initially told him not to worry and to simply massage and monitor it. But after a month, he sought a second opinion, which confirmed the lump was far more serious than originally thought.

“It was melanoma, stage 4,” Shatner said per the New York Post. “I said, ‘Stage 4?’ And someone in the room said, ‘Sorry.’ I said, “What are you sorry about?’ It was like, ‘Better pack your things.’ That person who said ‘sorry,’ that was very sad, like you are going to die. And I was. They said if this [treatment] they used did not work, I had about 5 months.”

The actor also lives with permanent tinnitus, a constant ringing in his ears, which started after he stood too close to a special effects explosion while filming the Star Trek episode Arena in 1967. According to the Mayo Clinic, tinnitus can be short-term or lifelong, causing ringing or other noises in the ears.

Despite his age and health struggles, Shatner has kept a busy lifestyle. At 90, he flew into space aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin NS-18 Mission in 2021. Most recently, the 94-year-old announced plans to travel to the Galapagos Islands this November for a “Space 2 Sea” convention.

William Shatner (born March 22, 1931) is a Canadian actor, author, and cultural icon best known for playing Captain James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek series. His career spans over seven decades, with acclaimed roles in television, film, and on stage, including T.J. Hooker and Boston Legal, which earned him multiple Emmy Awards. Beyond acting, he has written books, recorded music, and remained a beloved figure in pop culture.
