She Walked Away from Hollywood to Battle a Mystery Illness — A ’70s Icon at 81

Shelley Fabares, beloved star of The Donna Reed Show and Coach, was at the height of her career when frightening symptoms struck.

She described her first episode as an out-of-body experience, leaving her fearful and confused. For nearly seven years,

doctors couldn’t find the cause. Her health continued to decline, putting her life in danger.

Born in 1944, Shelley began acting as a child and became a household name as Mary Stone. She later starred in films

with Elvis Presley and appeared in hit shows like Mork & Mindy and Barnaby Jones. In 1989, she joined

the sitcom Coach, a role that made her an adult TV favorite. At the same time, her mysterious illness silently progressed.

Eventually, doctors discovered her liver was failing due to an autoimmune disorder. At 56, she underwent a lifesaving

liver transplant in 2000. The recovery was long and difficult, both physically and emotionally.

Shelley later admitted to battling depression before finding gratitude for her second chance at life.

Through it all, her husband, MASH* star Mike Farrell, was by her side, providing constant love and support. Now 81, Shelley Fabares lives a quiet life away

from Hollywood. Her story of survival and resilience continues to inspire. As she reflects, “Our time here is so limited… every second is a gift.”
