Officer Didarul Islam Killed in Midtown Shooting, Remembered as Hero

NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was among four people killed in a July 28 shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Islam, off duty and

working security, was shot in the back when the gunman opened fire in the lobby. The suspect continued to the 33rd floor before dying by suicide.

A dedicated officer from the NYPD’s 47th precinct, Islam had served over three years. He lived in Queens with

his wife and two children, and they were expecting a third child. He is being honored for his bravery and selflessness.

The shooter, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, left behind a note referencing personal grievances

and possible mental health struggles. Authorities have not confirmed a motive, though the building houses major offices, including the NFL.

City officials, including Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul, expressed deep condolences.

A memorial for Officer Islam is being planned as the city mourns his loss and supports his family.
