Astronaut’s Sobering Realization After Seeing Earth from Space

Former NASA astronaut Ron Garan spent 178 days in space, orbiting Earth 2,842 times.

What changed him most wasn’t the distance, but a realization that humanity is “living a lie.”

Experiencing the ‘overview effect,’ Garan was struck by Earth’s fragile atmosphere—a

“paper-thin layer” that sustains all life. From space, he saw no borders, only a vibrant,

interconnected biosphere. He observed how human-made systems treat the planet as a resource for economic gain.

Since returning, Garan has become an advocate for environmental sustainability, founding

the Manna Energy Foundation and Fragile Oasis to promote global change. His journey

emphasizes the need to prioritize the planet’s well-being over short-term economic interests.
