Rapist Collapses After Learning What He May Have Contracted From His Victim

Note: we are republishing this story, which originally made the news in September 2013.

A British man convicted of raping a sleeping woman was notified that he may have contracted HIV from his victim.

Richard Thomas, 27, was sentenced to five years and four months in prison for raping a woman in her home while she slept, according to the BBC. Thomas said he knew the woman was ill but did not know it could be HIV. He reportedly collapsed when told the newsThomas said he had been drinking heavily on the night of the attack, as well as using cocaine and ecstasy at various points during the evening. He said he could not recall much from the attack but believed the woman’s story.

Police say Thomas let himself into the woman’s home uninvited and went into the bedroom where he then assaulted her as she slept. The woman had taken a sleeping tablet and awoke to find Thomas raping her.

“She froze and no words were exchanged,” said prosecutor Harry Pepper. “He pulled up his shorts and left.”

The lawyer for Thomas, Virginia Hayton, said that Thomas was unsure of the events of the night but told her the woman “would not lie, she tells the truth. If she says I have done it, I have done it,” according to The Telegraph. It was not immediately clear whether Thomas knew his victim before the assault.

Judge Mark Brown presiding over the case ordered that Thomas be sentenced to five years and four months, as well as giving him a permanent listing on the Sex Offenders Register for the “dreadful offense.”

Hayton described Thomas as agonizing over the night’s events. Thomas has previous convictions but none for sexual assault or rape.

“[Thomas] is remorseful and cannot understand why he did it and it is troubling him,” Hayton said. She also noted that Thomas has a long history with drugs and alcohol, having started to use cannabis at age 9 and then drinking by 11. Thomas also said he was addicted to cocaine and ecstasy at 13 and received treatment for the addictions during his teenage years.

Thomas was set to find out the results of the HIV test shortly after being notified of the possibility. It was not clear if Thomas contracted the disease.

Hayton offered little condolences to Thomas in the meantime.

“This [HIV test] has been hanging over his head,” she said, according to the Mirror. “It’s his own fault. If he’d not committed this offense he would not have placed himself in this position.

I СAUGHT MY KIDS’ BABYSITTER COMING OUT OF THE SHOWER WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS HOME, SO I TURNED ON THE NANNY CAM THE NEXT DAY. My hubby and I hired a babysitter for our two kids as we’re always slammed with work. Everything’s been fine until yesterday… I walk in at 6 p.m., and there she is with her hair all wet! She says she had to shower because my kid spilled milk on her. But here’s where it gets totally weird — my husband, who’s supposed to be at work then, is right there at home! My gut tells me something is totally wrong. So, the next day, I dug out this old nanny cam we had and secretly set it up in the living room before I headed to work. Not even an hour later, I checked the cam to see MY HUSBAND, who’d left for work, sneaking in the door. But the scene I saw next was not at all what I was afraid to see. ⬇️

I came home one evening to find our babysitter, Jenna, emerging from the bathroom with wet hair, apologizing for a milk spill. She explained she had showered…

I ADOPTED A BABY WHO WAS LEFT AT THE FIRE STATION – 5 YEARS LATER, A WOMAN KNOCKED ON MY DOOR & SAID, “YOU HAVE TO GIVE MY CHILD BACK” I still remember the night I found him—a tiny bundle wrapped in a worn-out blanket, left in a basket near my fire station. It was my shift, and the cold wind howled as if mourning the little soul abandoned to fate. He was barely a week old, his cries weak but determined. My partner, Mike, and I exchanged glances, unspoken words passing between us. “We’ll call CPS,” Mike said, his voice steady. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that this baby was meant for something more… or maybe just meant for me. Months passed, and when no one came forward to claim him, I filed for adoption. I named him Lucas. Being a single dad wasn’t easy, but Lucas made it worth every sleepless night and every ounce of spilled spaghetti sauce on the carpet. He was my son in every way that mattered. Fast forward five years, and our little life together had settled into a rhythm. Lucas was thriving—a chatterbox who loved dinosaurs and believed he could outrun the wind. That night, we were building a Jurassic Park out of cardboard when a knock at the door shattered our peace. Standing there was a woman in her early thirties, her face pale, her eyes carrying the weight of world. “YOU HAVE TO GIVE MY CHILD BACK,” she said, her voice trembling but firm.⬇️😳Story continues in the comments
