In a tragic turn of events, a Russian couple who had been missing for nearly 12 years were finally found in 2017, their car submerged in the River Volga in central Russia.

Ilya Zhirnov, 25, and his girlfriend Kira Cherkasova, 22, disappeared in December 2005, after Ilya borrowed his father’s car to pick up Kira from work.

Despite an extensive search at the time of their disappearance, no trace of the couple or the car was found, and the case was eventually closed due to a lack of evidence. However, their families never gave up hope that Ilya and Kira would one day be found.

Twelve years ago, in the central Russian city of Cheboksary, two young people, ages twenty-five and twenty-two, respectively, named Ilya Zhirnov and Kira Cherkasova, vanished from sight. Until the amateur diver discovered their automobile at the bottom of the river, no one knew what had happened to them.

The police claimed that the car had been submerged for more than ten years.

The discovery came unexpectedly when a local diving enthusiast was exploring the waters near a beach on the Volga River. During his dive, he stumbled upon a car submerged in the river, according to a report by the Daily Mail. The man immediately notified authorities, who recovered the vehicle the following day.

Inside the car, authorities found the bodies of Ilya and Kira, along with their personal documents, including IDs, which confirmed their identities. Investigators believe that the couple likely lost control of the car on an icy road, leading to the tragic accident that sent them into the river. However, the investigation is ongoing to confirm the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

The police identified the two missing people with the use of identity documents that survived the underwater submersion. The diver found two bodies and the young people’s personal items inside the automobile.

Even though this is a heartbreaking discovery, it might provide fresh insight into the case.

As per the police’s first theory, the two lost control of their car on the icy road and ended up in the river without anyone noticing or reporting the mishap to the authorities.

But a lot of people are curious about how long it will take the police to find out for sure what actually happened to the two people. Will this case be opened for further investigation?
