In 2013, Australian social entrepreneur Elliot Costello visited Cambodia, where he met a 10-year-old girl named Thea in an orphanage.

Despite enduring years of abuse after her father’s death, Thea’s resilience and spirit deeply moved Elliot. During their time together,

she painted one of his nails—an act that inspired him to keep it painted as a symbol of her suffering and that of millions of abused children.

That moment sparked the idea for Polished Man, a global movement encouraging men to paint one nail in solidarity with the 1 in 5 children

who experience sexual violence before the age of 18. More than just a gesture, the campaign promotes awareness,

starts conversations, and raises funds for prevention and recovery programs.

With support from celebrities like Chris Hemsworth and Zac Efron, Polished Man gained worldwide traction, raising $8.7 million

for trauma recovery, education, and protection of at-risk children. It challenges traditional notions of masculinity,

empowering men to take an active stand against abuse.

Through this movement, Elliot honors Thea’s story, proving that even small acts—like painting a nail—can drive real change.

Polished Man is a powerful reminder that together, we can help create a safer world for every child.
